Well, that was a longer gap between newsletters than we'd planned.

The inbox has had a break. Cambridgeshire certainly hasn't.

And while we've continued adding articles to the website, there's something rather nice about having the best stories, local discoveries and everyday questions delivered together.

This week we've got a small home repair with a potentially enormous price tag, questions about where council money actually goes, some tempting local bakeries and a Cambridge patch of grass that has generated rather more debate than grass normally deserves.

There are bills to question, places to discover and one or two things you may want to argue about.

Right then. Kettle on. Let's get into it.

That tiny plant growing from the gutter is funny until the rain starts running down the wall.

One of the dullest home-maintenance jobs can become considerably more interesting when it's ignored.

Leaves, moss, Cambridgeshire rain and the little home job that's extremely easy to postpone.

Thirty funded childcare hours can sound straightforward until working hours, meals, holidays and additional charges enter the calculation.

Here's a better way for Cambridgeshire families to compare what childcare will actually cost.

Don't compare childcare by the headline figure. Compare what your family's actual working week — and year — will cost.

Your wages arrive and briefly wipe out the overdraft. A few bills later, you're back in it again.

Here's why that repeating payday pattern matters and where Cambridgeshire residents can find free help.

If payday only gets you out of your overdraft for a few days, the pattern may be telling you more than the balance itself.

Cattle, dogs, wildlife, cyclists, walkers and crowds of more than 25,000 can all have a claim on the same Cambridge grass.

How does Midsummer Common keep everybody happy?

Cows graze it, dogs run across it and thousands party on it.

Midsummer Common may have the hardest job of any patch of grass in Cambridge.

The Cupboard Confession:- There's something lurking at the back of your kitchen cupboard. We know there is.

Be honest. What's the oldest unopened food item currently hiding in your kitchen?

A tin with a label you barely recognise?

A packet bought for a recipe you never made?

Something that's survived three kitchen clear-outs?

Your challenge: Find the oldest unopened item in your cupboard.

No need to eat it. In fact, depending on what you discover, we'd strongly recommend against it.

Tell us what you found and how old it is.

Bonus points if you can't remember buying it.

Planning to light the wood burner again?

Cambridge still has three smoke-control areas, while the proposed citywide order has not yet started.

This article explains how to check your address, confirm your appliance status and choose fuel legally.

It also covers Ready to Burn wood, banned waste materials, chimney smoke and the penalties for continuing breaches.
