Cambridgeshire needs more homes. It also needs somewhere for people to live that doesn’t leave existing communities feeling boxed in.

That situation is now playing out in March, where plans for 125 new homes on a field have been approved, according to a current BBC report.

For people nearby, the argument is not simply “homes good” or “development bad”.

It is about what arrives with them. More houses can mean more families able to stay in the area. 

They can also mean extra traffic, pressure on schools and services, and the loss of open land that residents use every day.

March is not the only place facing the debate.

A separate proposal reported for the outskirts of a Cambridgeshire city could bring up to 180 homes.

Put those stories together and the county’s growth can start to feel less like one planning application and more like a steady march of building sites.

That does not automatically make either scheme wrong.

Nor does an approval settle the argument.

It means the planning decision has been made at this stage; it does not tell residents how the finished development will feel, how quickly building will happen or whether local services will keep pace.

The March plan is therefore a test of more than housing numbers.

Will new residents get the roads, schools, shops and transport links they need? 

Will the field’s loss feel justified by the homes created?

And can the development connect properly with March rather than sitting beside it as another isolated estate?

Those are the details residents will be watching as the scheme moves forward.
